Amazon.com Product Description

Roomy enough for the whole family, the Coleman Sundome tent sleeps up to five people at a time in complete comfort. The Sundome is outfitted with Coleman's exclusive WeatherTec system, a series of technical features intended to protect you from inclement weather and nasty storms. WeatherTec tents are built with a coated polyester fabric combined with anti-wicking thread, webbing, and zippers, all designed to keep you dry when the rain comes down. The tent's welded waterproof floor and inverted floor seams, meanwhile, dramatically increase the water resistance by hiding the needle holes inside the tent and away from the elements. And in addition to offering fully taped rainfly seams, the included rainfly covers the doors and windows tightly and incorporates easy-to-use Velcro frame attachments. In fact, Coleman is so confident in its WeatherTec system that it exposes its WeatherTec tents to a rain room that simulates nasty downpours, and to a wind machine capable of blowing hurricane force gusts. The results? Even after the tests, Coleman guarantees its WeatherTec tents will keep you dry. The Sundome's interior is notably spacious, with a base that measures 10 feet by 10 feet and a center height of 72 inches--plenty of headroom for most people. In addition, the tent is engineered to keep you cool thanks to the adjustable Variflo ventilation and vented Cool-Air port. Best of all for travel-weary campers, the Sundome sets up quickly, with two shock-corded steel poles, continuous pole sleeves, a pin-and-ring design, and InstaClip attachments. The tent even comes with easy-to-follow instructions sewn into the durable carrying bag. Other features include a heavy-duty welcome mat, a single door, separate bags for the poles and stakes, a privacy vent window, an interior gear pocket, and an electrical access port.

The Sundome tent sleeps up to 5 people comfortably.

About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

"Great tent!" 2010-08-07
By rickskids
Had the 7X7 model for years, was great while the kids were small. We out grew the tent and I hated the idea of having to replace it with something else then I saw the 10X10 model and I bought it right away. Same heavy duty quality construction and water proof. I'll miss being able to pitch my 7X7 just about anywhere but for the extra space, double, it will be well worth it. Perfect size for one adult, two kids, gear, a queen size air mat and anything else you don't want to get wet. Only thing I didn't like was the entry flap is not attached on this model so I use a small trap folded and staked. If you're looking for a disposable tent this isn't it, it will last for years with proper care.

"easy set up!" 2010-08-06
By sturgis 2010
I am so happy this tent is easy to set up! I neglected to do a trial set up before I embarked on my trip. Luckily, after riding 1400 miles on my motorcycle, the tent almost set it self up (not really, but it was easy). We fit a double tall queen size mattress and all our gear and had room to spare. I didn't waterproof it either, and on the first night it rained! I woke up dry and am very happy with my purchase.

"Fantastic Tent" 2010-08-02
By Anne Fattig (Orlando FL USA)
I bought this tent to take on RAGBRAI in Iowa. It worked out fantastic! We used a large queen size air mattress and it fit easily plus had plenty of room left over on either side. It was also very east to put up. As someone who dosent use a tent very often, it went up and came down very fast and easily. It even fit back into the bag without much problem. One night we had a pretty bad wind/rain storm and the tent held up nicely. We didn't do any extra water proofing of the tent, just took it out of the bag and put it up. There was no rain inside the tent when we woke up in the morning and all was fine. There were many other people in our camp that weren't as lucky so I was very thankful. I will definitely recommend this tent to people in the future.

"incredibly fast set up" 2010-07-19
By student of the craft (Off 280)
This tent sets up so fast we couldn't believe it. You CAN stand in the middle of it provided you don't have two cots set up in the middle of it. My only wishes for improvement would be: a pocket on both sides of the tent (what's with that, Coleman? Only one person needs to find things in the middle of the night?) a slightly easier closure (the little zipper cover sometimes gets in the way) and a few more loops for hanging lightweight items. Other than that, full marks. And of course it won't fit back in the carrying pouch. Forgeddabout it.

"2 person tent" 2010-08-02
By Cate
Wenzel Starlight 2-Person Hiker/Biker Tent
I bought this tent for my son to take camping with him in the Eastern Kentucky Mountains. Every night there is a heavy dew fall, almost like rain. He loved the tent. The ease of setting it up, weight and rolled up size is the reason he chose this one. He's a BIG guy, so it might not work for 2 people comfortably, but it serves its' purpose. Make fure you set it up right, or it will drip water (if it rains), but other than that, it's fantastic. We recommend it highly.

"It is what it is" 2010-07-15
By ~kev~ (Texas)
For a tent that cost less then $25, its an outstanding product. But keep in mind, sometimes you get what you pay for. If you spend $25 on a tent, expect a low quality product.

If you can afford a more expensive tent - then go ahead and spend the money.
If this is all you can afford - do not expect a high quality product.

My Starlight tent was bought around 1994, 1995 or 1996; I do not remember the exact year. Since then it has gone on lots of hiking and camping trips.

Some of the things I like this tent - its light, its compact, its easy to setup, its easy to take down, it fits into an ALICE pack nicely, and the floor does not feel weak.

Some of the things I do not like - the rear tent pole will sometimes fall down, so the tent can collapse in the middle of the night, its not free standing, it does not provide a lot of rain protection, it can get hot in the summer time. I would carry 2 spare rain ponchos and put them over the tent at night, just in case it rained.

But hey, what do you "really" expect out of a $25 tent? It is what it is.

"They sent me the wrong item and the one I got is a piece of ,,,," 2010-07-09
By starmom
I wanted the dome tent that is shown in the cover photo. Unbenounced to me, there is a totally different tent on another picture if you try to look at different pics of the first tent. Apparently, there is no way to get the tent that is shown in the main picture, because there is nowhere to chose which type you want. they just send you the crappy one, and there is no customer service line or way that I could tell to return it for the correct one. So I got stuck with something I do not want. Hopefully, everyone reads the reviews before they order because this happened to someone else also.

"Inexpensive, very light." 2010-04-12
By Michael Williams
I purchased this for use backpacking. I wanted something cheep & light as I don't plan to use it much, and don't want to carry something heavy for long hikes. In short, it is cheep (paid $22 new) and light, but seems to be built well.

It is small. Not much room for more then me and my sleeping bag inside. Not sure how it will hold up to rain as I have not experienced any yet. It was easy and quick to set up and served it's purpose.

"Budget Tent" 2010-03-26
By Tugg Speedman (Indianapolis, IN)
Pros: Cheap, compact(17"x3") and lightweight.

Cons: Have to steak down for it to stand up. Which means you'll need a hammer of some sort if you wish not to use a rock.

Material is very thin and seems won't last long

22square feet of space inside makes for a tight 2man fit(very tight)

This would be good tent for brand new hiker/bikers. At only 22dollars, you can use it twice and get your moneys worth then just trash it if you decide hiking/biking isn't your cup of tea.

"Cheap and reliable!" 2010-08-16
By Victoire Becart (Little Rock, AR)
If you're looking for an air mattress, you're probably not looking for the greatest sleep of your life, but for a cheap, practical and quick way to sleep.

This mattress is just that.

It comes with an air mattress pump which is great: it takes about a minute to inflate completely! I read in other reviews that batteries were included, but not in my mattress. I guess it was a packing error.

I slept on the mattress for a full week and I only had to put air in on the 5th day because it had deflated a little bit, but nothing bad, ie; I never woke up with my body touching the ground, there was still plenty of support.

Deflating was a little complicated but we managed to go through with it. It folds up nicely and fit in my suitcase for the trip home!

Pros:

-Very cheap
-Reliable
-Confortable
-Electric Pump included

I can't see any cons!
I highly recommend, it is the perfect additional bed!

"real good" 2010-08-10
By bijju
I got this bed after my raised twin air-bed got messed. At first I didn't expect much since previously I used a big bed and now am using a smaller one, but it is as good as the previous one. It is excellent for outdoor use, though the battery operated pump takes some time to fully inflate it(I use an electric pump, which I ordered for a small price), it is an excellent product for the money and worth it.

P.S: For those who are using air-beds for the first time I advice you not to fully inflate it, put the right amount of air into it, for a comfortable sleep. Atleast that was th mistake I did in the beginning.

"Better than sleeping on the floor!" 2010-06-04
By MJH (NY)
I ordered two of these air mattresses to fit into a tent I purchased to go camping with my 8 year old son. They just fit into the tent and were a little cumbersome, but the blower provided blew them up in minutes and they were better than sleeping on the floor! I somehow managed to kick the plug in the middle of the night and it deflated rather quickly I unfortunately found out and I didn't want to wake up the camp at 4 AM so make sure it's in tight before you try to go to sleep!

"Great Value in a Mesh Chair, But A Touch Small for "XL"" 2010-07-15
By S. Cirian (Chicago)
Overall, I gave it 4 stars and would buy it again after a lot of comparison shopping for a chair with mesh insert.

Our old chairs (different brand, first generation quad chair, ridiculously heavy, very sweaty) finally started falling apart, so it was time to look for new ones. One of the key things I looked for was mesh in both the top and bottom, since our old ones made you pretty sweaty in summer, and that is when you mostly use these. (Did I mention the old ones were sweaty?)
So these fit the bill. Some details on the Coleman XL Broadband Quad w/ Mesh:

Pros:

- Mesh is nice and cool compared to solid fabric panels
- Solid construction
- Lightweight (Amazon site says about 6 - 7 lbs; seems right without actually weighing, and that is much lighter than a lot of the competition, which weighs in as much as 13 lbs)

Cons:

- XL is a bit misleading - they just fit me (6' 2" and 220 lbs, reasonably in shape). This is what made me give 4 stars, not 5.
- Coleman makes an XXL (or XXXL?) quad which is significantly larger, but not available in mesh. If it was, I would have bought that instead. (Kmart and Sears sell a Northwest Territory "Big Boy Mesh" which is the only one of these with mesh that I could find, but they are a pain to order from - web site says in stock but they canceled 4 orders for out of stock even though the web sites says in stock.)
- Time will tell how well the mesh insert stands up to wear and tear. But all of the competition with mesh inserts will have the same question. (The NRS Duramesh chair's name would imply it is more durable than the competition, but for almost 3 times the price it darned well better be.)
- Only one cupholder. Not that I need to have 2 beverages at hand, but it would be nice to have the 2nd cupholder for snacks or other things around the campfire, like a lighter, cell phone, etc.
- The back could be a little higher. At around 36", it hits me a little low on the shoulders, but again this seems to be about the same for most of the competition. (Coleman - please make a version in XXL!)

Overall, this is great value for the money and I would buy again.

Just got this chair today great quality and build the box was completly destroyed upon arrival but the chair was still in one whole peice folded it out and sat in it passed out on the chair like i do at home. great buy for the price and coleman quality has never really let me down. Highly recomend, but if you want a wider chair for the big guys out there get the XXXL version this XL is a lil narrow but just enough to sit my 190lb body in comfortably.

"Bought two. Both had electrical problems" 2010-07-29
By Robert Chast
First the good: I purchased two fans and used them on three camping trips. They really keep the tent comfortable. Now the bad: On my second camping trip one unit began pulsing slow and then fast. I assumed it needed new batteries. On the third trip of the season, one fan stopped working on low speed and there was a strong electrical burning smell and the power pack was hot to the touch. I switched over to the second fan and it too overheated causing the battery pack switch to begin melting. I called the Coleman help number and they indicated that they haven't had reports of any problems but offered to repair or replace it at no charge and sent me a return shipping ticket so that I didn't have to pay to have it shipped back. I'm hoping the replacement units last longer than the originals.

"good for cool nights and a hot tent" 2010-07-09
By A. Molica (nashua nh)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3JM96MQ8C7JWB IT works if air is cool and tent is hot, won't help if it's a heat wave and it's hot air outside and it's a hot tent. so it depends on the temp of the outside air as to whether or not it does the trick. the noise level is low and steady enough to put a baby to sleep.

"Great fan!" 2010-07-06
By CincyMom (Cincinnati, OH)
I got this fan because we are planning on a lot of summer camping in the mid-west. We've used it one weekend so far. The temps were in the mid 70s at night, very humid and very stagnant. We used it in a 6-person tent with all the windows open, and it had just the right amount of air circulation to make an otherwise uncomfortable night bearable. Specs say there is a 20-hour battery life on high power (40-hours on low) - we used it on high for 2 full nights and didn't have any noticeable reduction in power, and its still going strong. Money well spent.

Also, to comment on the noise concerns - no doubt you can hear the fan, but its not incredibly loud. Its a steady droning that was good at drowning out the noise of the campground.

Amazon.com Backpack Guide
Finding the Right Backpack
For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:
Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.
The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.
There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.
External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.
If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.
Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.
Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

"GREAT TENT!!!" 2010-07-07
By Daren and Lucretia (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)
This tent is absolutely the best tent I have owned. I have been tent camping over the last 20 years, and this one is by far the greatest yet. It is easily set up with only two people, is very sturdy, and very roomy. It fits two full queen air mattresses with equivilant room to spare. The only complaint is that the stakes are a bit small, but that's basically standard for most tents. The hinged door is such a nice feature. I'd highly recommend picking up a small piece of fake grass, astro turf, or carpet for right outside the door to grab the dirt, etc; from your feet before you enter. 3 uses now, and looking forward to winter camping in it as well!

"Love this tent!" 2010-07-02
By jamaplustwo
This is my family's first tent, and it was great. Easy to set up and take down, if you take your time. Would have given it 5 stars but for 2 things; shock cord poles are a little loose (I will shorten and re-tie the internal elastics to correct) and storage bag could be a little bigger. Other than that, we loved it. Especially the hinged door.

"great roomy tent" 2010-06-08
By A. M. P. Doyon (Kentucky)
This tent is large - but not too large... I have set it up in my yard to check it out and try it out. You'll need a campsite big enough to hold it - like it may not fit on an old school standard size 'tent pad', but it's not obnoxiously enormous at all... I wanted something new after my recent camping trip in my old walmart tent ended up with us in puddles. I saw 3 or 4 people in the campground with this tent and really liked it. I wish it had a room divider, but that's the only thing it's lacking. It's VERY easy to put up. I did it all by myself in about 15 minutes, the first time. I took it down by myself in about 5 minutes - and my first attempt at rolling it up, it fit perfectly back in the bag. I love the multiple power ports. Don't really understand the rear cooler access - I probably wont use it for that purpose, but it's nice to have some access ports for whatever reason you might wanna use it for! I love that it has windows even with the rainfly - that's a rare feature and I think it'll be awesome for ventilation. THere's a ton of space in there and I love the hinged door. Very happy with this purchase, and it's priced very well for it's quality and size!

"Excellent design, bone dry, plenty of room, what else?" 2010-06-02
By D. Dudley (Northwest)
All I can say is "Wow"!
Cheaper than most family tents, but actually keeps the rain out. I'm 30 minutes north of Seattle. Just unpacked and put up the tent this morning as soon as it arrived during an hour no rain break, then it started pooring. Eight hours of rain and it's still bone dry inside out in my backyard. I can't believe a 450mm shell/tent can do that.

More than enough room for our whole family, me, wife, 13yr and 1yr old daughters. Two big foam beds and a play pen to boot. I searched reviews all over the net trying to find a decent family tent and hoped the reviews I read about his one were all true, and I am happy to say they are. Coleman F-N rox.

The rain fly that covers the outside of the door is part of the whole rain fly (all one piece), there is actually room for three chairs to stay dry under it (picture misleads that it is smaller). I was just out there smoking a cig thinking, America still has a few great companies left that mean well for their customers.

The floor is not cheap tub tarp, it's decent. But, I still got two 6 x 8 cheap carpets @ lowes. Lesson learned from years of camping if you want your tent to last.

The front door is pure genius. The zippers are re-inforced and glide like butter. But, if you don't want to add tons of wear on your zipper (and we all know a tent is useless when the door zipper breaks, unless of course it's a coleman with this design), just don't zip it, and let the hinge spring it lightly shut. And the factory well placed velcro hold it shut.

But wait! that's not all! LOL.. the windows tilt at an angle so no rain gets in while you hang in the rain. I was worried about the roof being open mesh, but unbelieveably, with NO TREATMENT, NO SEAM SEAL, STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY !!NO LEAKS!!. Yeah I am repeating myself, I am in awe.

"spacious, quality tent" 2010-06-01
By rcwant2be (Seattle)
Just spent a weekend in this tent in the Seattle area. We had <12 hours w/o rain, with a night of total downpour. The tent stayed dry. Plenty of space for an adult, teenager & 2 large dogs. Also had space inside for our gear & 2 folding camp chairs. The hinge door is GREAT. No need to constantly zip & unzip. The guy lines coming off the front of the fly are somewhat confusing. Also, due to terrain we did not get the tent stretched as taught as possible. Don't forget to attach the fly to the poles w/ velcro. All in all, it goes up quickly & easily, especially when you consider the size. My one complaint is it doesn't have room dividers.

"Almost a 5 star" 2010-07-27
By Bon
The product is ultra-compact as advertised. Worked well during our 11-day backpacking trip. Good for temperate weather above 30 degrees. It could have been a 5-star for me if the zipper did not get snagged constantly.

"comfy warm bag" 2010-07-25
By TL
I used this for a spring camping trip.

-comfortable
-roomy (esp around the legs)
-very warm , I'm always cold so this was important
-packs up small and fits into the sleeping bag compartment of my backpack
-definitely does take some effort to get it into compression sack but worth it to save the space, all in all took me 5 minutes to stuff it back into sack
-got a better nights sleep than I do at home

"Solid for the price; no problems with the sack either!" 2010-07-24
By m dot (CA)
A solid bag. Took it out for some desert camping this summer, and while I wasn't exactly lounging around in my undies during those forty degree nights, I was able to wrap up and get restful sleep using just a cheap cotton liner and basic accordion-style sleeping pad (which was rated at like +2 degrees warmth or something ridiculously marginal). Not sure that I would call it zero-degree, but again, I'm not sure how much of a difference a legit pad might make.

I was nervous about the compression sack given that so many reviewers here had problems with it, but my buckles didn't break over four consecutive days of breaking camp, and they didn't break during the following trip either. I tend to use my bodyweight to compress the sleeping bag, though, and just rely the straps to cinch, rather than do any heavy pulling. I'm confident the buckles will last for a while.

The surface of the sleeping bag itself was coated in this not-so-nice-smelling, waxy film right out of the box. Not sure if this was a byproduct of the manufacturing process, or something that sleeping bags are supposed to have; in the former case, it came right out during the first washing anyway; in the latter case, oops.

"Decent for the price" 2010-07-22
By cadjer34
I bought this just because of the great reviews, so I couldn't pass it up, especially for the price. Took it on a 4 day backpacking trip in the Saint Joe National Forest, and I must say the lesser weight in my pack was amazing. It kept me warm for 40 degree nights, but it is too thin to use any colder without layers of clothing. The material feels cheap but it seems to hold up well, and I am going to be interested in how long I can make it last. The compression sack as awesome, and sucks it down to a size you wouldn't think possible when you look at the bag.

Overall, I think I got what I payed for and it worked great for late spring -- to early fall camping/backpacking/etc.

P.S. for anyone wondering about size. I am 6'1' 185lbs, and it fit me perfectly with about an inch or two of extra room, and was pretty snug around the chest.

"Bigger Dudes Beware" 2010-07-20
By Frank Wood
Good comfy sleeping bag... if you fit! I'm (6'-1" / 250lbs / approx. 54" chest) and I measured my shoulders before ordering... I thought I would fit fine, but when it's fully zipped... it's VERY TIGHT at the shoulders/chest. So much so it caused me shoulder pains for a day or so after. It's okay when it's not so cold and you can sleep with one arm out... but when it's below 50, you better zip that sucker up if you want to have a chance to stay warm.

It's a great comfy bag if you fit though. Scrunches up pretty small, but takes a decent amount of effort to get it back in the stuff sack. Bought it to fit in the side bag of my Harley FLTRI when I go camping off the bike... fits fine for those in the same market.

I'm going to give it to the wifey and find something bigger.

Product Description

Ideal for weekend camping trips with family and friends, Eureka's Bitterroot square dome tent offers a spacious 121 square feet of room to comfortably sleep five to six campers. Protective enough for three-season use, the Bitterroot features four large windows to maximize air circulation for camping comfort while zippered window covers control the amount of air flow and provide privacy. No-see-um mesh will keeps out the tiniest insects. High/low door vents are featured at the top and bottom, as bottom vent drafts in cool dry air while upper opening will vent out warm moist air. A side-opening door design allows for easy access for campers to enter and exit the tent. Twin-track zippers provide separate operation of the door and window. Windows combine with large areas of permeable fabric and mesh in the roof cloth for superior air flow while minimizing condensation. To ensure a dry and comfortable camping trip, all major seams and reinforcements are factory sealed to prevent water entry while a wrap-up bathtub floor minimizes ground level seams and will keep water out and the tent floor dry. In case you do encounter wet weather, a hooded fly on all sides protects the windows and allows for venting even while it's raining.
When packed up, the tent and its components measure 8 by 33 inches, allowing for easy transport to your camping destinations. The tent's fly and walls are constructed of a strong, UV-resistant polyester fabric while the floor's durable weave is made of heavy-duty poly oxford. With a seve-foot center height, even the tallest campers will be comfortable and move around easily.
Inside the tent, two mesh pockets, four gear loft/clothesline attachments, and a flashlight loop offer additional storage opportunities while a hanging gear loft organizer keeps small essentials close at hand and out of the way.
Designed with Eureka's StormShield features, this self-supporting, two-pole tent is quick and easy to set up with its durable shockcorded fiberglass frame, taffeta rod pockets, and clip attachments. Pole sections are interconnected with shockcords for quick set-up and to prevent lost parts. The shockcoding will also absorb and dissipate wind stress, reducing wear and tear on the tent's fabrics.
Eureka's Bitterroot tent features shockcorded fiberglass poles for easy setup.
A ring-and-pin assembly provides durable attachment of the tent body to the frame at the base. Storm rings on the fly, along with guylines, provide guy points in wind. Specifications:
  • Style: Two-pole square dome
  • Seasons: Three
  • Sleeps: Five to six
  • Footprint: 11 by 11 feet
  • Peak height: 7 feet
  • Area: 121 square feet

StormShield Construction Details:

  • Doors vent from the top and/or bottom, providing options for moderating air flow; warm air exits from the top and cool air enters at the bottom.
  • Cross ventilation through breathable interior fabric, large windows, and roof vents allows fresh air to enter and moist air to escape the tent.
  • High perimeter seams of the bathtub floors couple with factory taped floor seams and fly seams to keep water out.
  • Self-supporting frames flex to absorb and dissipate stress from strong winds.
  • Fabric reinforcements add an extra layer of protection to high wear and high stress areas.
  • Anchors for harsh weather include storm guyout rings, loops, and webs.
  • Nickel sliders on self-healing nylon coil zippers keep windows and doors working smoothly.
  • Shockcorded poles take the guesswork out of assembly, save time, and prevent lost parts.
  • Ring and pin assemblies make setup easy and reduce stress and abrasion where the frame and tent floor connect.
  • Post and grommet attachments speed set up and augment the tent’s structural integrity.
  • The twin-track zipper system allows door windows to operate independently of doors for convenience and ease of entry and exit.

About Eureka
Though the exact year is unknown, Eureka’s long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, New York, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for nineteenth century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.
The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and during the 1940 and even fabricated and erected the IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton. The seven acres of tents housed thousands of IBM salesmen during the company’s annual stockholders meeting, which had since outgrown its previous locale. In the 1940s, with the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.
In 1960, Eureka’s new and innovative Draw-Tite tent, with its practical, free standing external frame, was used in a Himalayan Expedition to Nepal by world renowned Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person documented to summit Mt. Everest only six years earlier. In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants from fierce 60+ mph winds and temperatures reaching below -20°F during the first all American Mt. Everest Expedition.
For backpackers and families, Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s. Truly the first StormShield design, this completely self-supporting and lightweight backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents the entire industry with sales reaching over 1 million by its ten year anniversary.
Eureka tents have also traveled as part of several historic expeditions, including the American Women’s Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent history, tents specially designed and donated by Eureka sheltered Eric Simonson and his team on two historic research expeditions to Mount Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history finding the remains of George Mallory, but the complete mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found amazing historical artifacts which are now on display at the Smithsonian.
Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

excellent heavy duty tent. very sturdy poles and the fabric is very heavy duty also. Great purchase!

"This is the best tent I have ever used!" 2010-06-23
By J. Booker (Orange County, CA)
It took less than 10 minutes for 2 people to set up the first time. The second time I set it up on my own in about the same amount of time. Eureka did a great job designing this tent. (See posted photos.)

I spread out a tarp to protect the floor and unfolded the tent. I placed two poles through the loops on the top of the tent and it was up. If you use the fly, you only have to place two poles crosswise with the tips in the flaps provided and throw it on top. It's that easy.

The plastic stakes provided worked perfectly; however, based on other reviews, I am going to purchase the MSR Ground Hog Stake Kit .

I bought this tent to be used as a "guest bedroom" for an RV. It is so nice. Everyone rotated their sleeping arrangements to spend a night in the tent. I may have to add a second "guest bedroom".

Looking forward to many happy camping trips with this tent.

"Reliable, easy to set up" 2010-05-17
By Terry B. Blevins
I bought the tent about 6 or so months ago and took it camping for the first time this last weekend. Very easy to set up. Took about 5-10 minutes max with 2 people, including staking down a ground cloth. The tent offered plenty of space! We had a queen size double decker air mattress for my wife and I (we were really roughing it) and a twin size single for our 3 year old. We had a 2 by 3 foot folding table and 3 large plastic tubs/totes with room to spare. It rained for two solid days, and other than a little moisture here and there on the floor (I believe from entering and exiting the tent), we stayed completely dry. Awesome tent for the money.

The down sides: the recommended floor saver is complete crap and slick as can be to walk on. I could have sewn together sandwich baggies that would have been stronger. The poles are a little heavy, and although they held up well while camping, one broke when we got home. I set it up in the yard to let it dry out good and it just went snap. I've had Eureka tents before and I'm sure they will take care of it, but just a little bit of a pain to deal with (not Eureka, just the hassle of having to do it).

"This is a nice big tent" 2010-01-09
By R. Perez (Miami, FL USA)
Bought this tent because my wife and I needed to upgrade from our small 2-person tent, from back before we had kids, and now needed a family-sized tent for car camping.

This is a great big tent. I'm 5'11" and can stand-up without a problem. The floor is big enough for a queen and twin airmatress, our gear and room to walk around.

It is heavy and I don't recommend it for anything but car camping. The shock-corded fiberglass poles are about 1/2" - 5/8" thick and heavy. Which makes up about 90% of the packing weight.

With some struggling, it could be set-up by one person, but I highly recommend having someone assist you.
It performed well in a light rain drizzle, the water beaded right off the rain fly.

My only negative, is that I only wish that the interior overhead storage would be completely removable. It's permanently attached onto the backwall.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

"Eureka Bitterroot 11x11- love it!" 2009-12-02
By R. Quintos (San Diego, CA)
This tent is very user friendly. We used it for family camping in Julian,CA during Thanksgiving weekend and it was worth the money. Due to traffic, it was dark when we reached our campsite. Fearing that set up would be difficult due to lack of light...I was worried. But this tent was so easy to set up, it only took me and my husband about 15-20 minutes to set it up in the dark with only one lamp. It is very spacious! I was able to fit 2 full size air mattresses and accomodate 2 adults, 1 teenager & 3 school age kids. And with plenty of space for our gears! It got pretty windy the following night but the tent did not even falter. I love the zipper to the door...the kids kept going in & out of the tent, they were able to open & close the zipper without any trouble. It didn't get caught on any fabric since there isn't any! The ceiling height is amazing. My husband is pretty tall but easily stood up inside the tent. I also appreciated the gear loft. It was convenient to stash away small items. Not to mention that this tent is guy-line free tent! I didn't have to worry about the kids tripping over any guy lines. Taking it down was a breeze. Typically, tents will not fit back in their bags after it's been opened. For this tent, we were able to fold everything back and place all the poles back in the bag without a problem. A must buy for family camping!
